Washington Cricket Club WCC-WMCB v Strikers on Sun 29 Apr 2018 at 19:00
Washington Cricket Club Won won by 43 Runs
Match report
The only night game of the season for WCC (against US Strikers at Veterans ground) started off with us winning the toss and deciding to bat. This being a better outfield and high scoring pitch, the idea was to put a huge total and bring the opponent under pressure. Thoufiq and Sam straight away put the other team on back foot with a brisk start, putting up a 50 run partnership in less than 5 overs. The extras helped as well. There were some clever shots and a huge six from Thoufiq. They got out within an over, and Shaswat departing soon after. This brought Ankur and Harsh in the middle who had a partnership of roughly 70 runs in 5 overs with Ankur scoring more than 50 of those runs. Ankur’s inning was a pure carnage, beating the bowlers to pulp. They tried everything (short balls, bouncers, beamers, off side, leg side), and result being, Ankur hitting them for boundaries all over the park. Bowlers lost their line and length and ended up bowling more wides. He scored 60 runs off 27 balls before getting run out to a good throw from the deep while stealing the second run. Karan came in next to have an unbeaten partnership of 50 runs with Harsh, to get to a massive total of 209. Their spinners did well under the lights to slow us down towards the end.
Strikers had a decent start, with 88 runs opening partnership in 11 overs (Thanks to multiple dropped catches), but were never able to keep up with the required run rate. Viral broke the opening partnership by crashing Muneeb’s stumps who was getting dangerous. Sonu was being very stingy, not giving any runs (just 7 runs in 3 overs). None of the other bowlers were able to cause any trouble for the batsmen until Venkat was brought to the attack. As a wicketkeeper it was my pleasure to witness his artsy bowling with perfect flight and other variations. He was unlucky to have some dropped catches and misfields. He finished with 5 wickets, including one on his last ball. Want to be modest, but can’t. There were 2 impressive stumpings by me on Venkat’s bowling and a stunning catch on the last ball of the 20th over (karan) to seal the deal. Overall a very convincing victory with a couple of stellar performances and good team support around those performances, except the fielding, which was mainly due to very cold weather and awkward visibility under the lights.
