Washington Cricket Club Won By 59 Runs

Match report The weather gods appeared to have let the temperatures warm up enough to signal the beginning of the 2018 WCL season as Washington took on Continental in their opening Twenty20 fixture at the Metro Oval. With the new season came a brand new concrete/ astro-turf wicket at the Metro Oval that added to the mystery of the first game. Viral made the right call at the coin flip and elected to bat first to put runs on the board.

The call to bat first immediately seemed to be paying dividends as Ankur dispatched the first ball to backwards square leg for a boundary. However, he was dismissed 2 balls later losing his stump to a combination of an irresponsible shot and some odd bounce. Monil was enterprising in his endeavors at the crease but only lasted a few balls as he tried to follow a sweetly timed six with a cheeky single, missed the ball and was adjudged LBW. Ravipal too hit a crisp boundary but was then dismissed in the fifth over trying to find a clever boundary in the third man region. At 38/3 in 5 overs, while the runs came steadily, Washington apparently was digging the proverbial hole for themselves. Shaswat joined Elango, who had already been looking dangerous, at the crease to rebuild. The pair consolidated for a bit and carefully shepherded the total to 77/3 in 10 overs giving Washington a decent platform to unleash an onslaught later. At this point, the general feeling in the camp and within those watching the game was that Washington would be able to get up to 150 odd - an above par score given the heavy outfield. Elango and Shaswat had other ideas though. Seemed like a flick of a switch but both Elango and Shaswat were not only looking to hit boundaries but were finding them with ease. While Elango made a mockery of the boundary by clearing it with ease over and over again, Shaswat could do nothing wrong on the day as his good shots went to the boundary and the not so good ones went through the fielders for runs. With 130/3 in 14 overs, Washington looked poised for a huge total and Elango looked every bit like carrying on to get a ton. Unfortunately, he was dismissed off a brilliant caught and bowled in the 15th over but not before he had scored a well-deserved 71 off 48 balls. This brought Viral to the crease, and the carnage of the next five overs would be deeply imprinted in the memory of Continental players for some time to come. Before being dismissed on the penultimate ball of the inning, Viral had gone from 12 in 7 balls to 42 in 15 balls, including 6 massive sixes, and had carried Washington to 199. Subhadip scored a single of the final delivery to make it an even 200. Shaswat remained unbeaten on 54 off 35 balls, and given the chances he got only the cricket gods and all their curses combined could had conjured up a perfect storm to take his wicket.

With the scoreboard pressure well and truly on Continental, Washington bowlers just needed to maintain their calm to put the game beyond the reach of the batsmen. Ankur and Jaggan started the proceedings for Washington and appeared to have more questions than the Continental batsmen were willing to answer. As Ankur bowled like his miserly self from one end, Jaggan picked up the wickets from the other end. At 20/2 in the first 5 overs, Continental was already looking at an asking rate of over 12. The next few overs didn't go for much either as Ankur and Jagan wrapped up their spells for 4-0-15-0 and 4-0-32-2. Elango replaced Ankur and continued the trend of limiting the scoring for the batsmen. Viral's introduction into the attack to replace Jagan resulted in a wicket the very first ball, and then a spilled chance to pick up Prabudda in the next over. All said and done, Continental had their backs against the wall at 56/3 in 10 overs. The spilled chance though came back to haunt the bowlers. Prabudda and Sameera put together a nice little rearguard action and started finding the boundary with a lot more ease than was the case in the first 10 overs. The pair got Continental to 127/3 in 17 overs - a commendable effort. Srikanth picked Prabudda in the 18th over and Subhadip got Sameera's scalp in the 19th over to a great catch by Viral to put an end to the Continental resistance. Continental finished at 141/5 giving Washington a 59 run victory in the first game of the season.

Man of the Match: Elango Asokan

Overall, Washington outperformed Continental in all three aspects of the game. However, there are plenty of opportunities for improvement in the fielding department for Washington. Sharper fielding could had easily widened the margin of victory. Hopefully, things will improve as the weather warms up and the off-season rust falls off. A great win nonetheless to compliment the efforts of our WMCB comrades who comprehensively beat Gymkhana in their Twenty20 encounter.
