Match report
Master Class from Ashutosh!!!
Pitch report: Laurel 4
The wicket looked like it had about 2 smaller strips on the pitch with gaps in between. The strips itself were soft. Looking at this we knew there would be bounce but it would be very sticky!! Just to give an idea of the bounce, both Madhu and Ashu were hit on the helmets by gentle medium pacers, Viraal and Pratik were given one bouncer warnings during their spells!!
Toss: With the state of the pitch and the humid conditions it was important to bat first to get a considerable advantage. This season Viraal had not lost many tosses and after a toss loss on Saturday in WCL and the entire team wishing him "Vijayee Bhava" on his way to the toss, emerged victorious. Without any hesitation we opted to Bat.
Master Class: Ashu and Madhu opened the innings on what looked to be a pretty tough wicket. The bowling was good and both Ashu and Madhu played watchfully negotiating with the sticky bounce. When width was on offer they found the boundary very easily aided by a typical quick outfield at Laurel. Ashu always looked in good form the last couple of games and was unfortunate that his scores did not reflect his form. This weekend Ashu looked ever so determined to capitalize on his form and it was an absolutely delightful treat to watch him bat as he blocked the unpredictable balls on the stumps with soft hands while majestically dispatching balls to the boundary when width was on offer. Madhu on the other hand was in good form also and was a little more aggressive and constantly stepped out to get to the pitch of the ball for the boundary.
Both Madhu and Ashu kept the scoreboard going at over run a ball. Madhu got out edging a ball to the keeper. The first wicket fell at 91 in the 15th over. Madhu was not feeling well and left home after a very well made 39 of 45 balls.
Ashu was joined by TC who also looked in great form(which he has from the time I have known him :)) and was determined to put on a show after getting out to a full toss last game. TC dealt with the weird bounce very well and like his partner at the other end kept the scoreboard ticking at a very good run rate. His innings also had a sublime cover drive for which the TV commentators would have loved to say nobody moves!! He picked the gap perfectly. He got out to an odd bounce ball for a well made 31 of 49 balls and had a 68 run partnership with Ashu. Ashu on the other end continued to play chanceless and kept the feilders busy having them to constantly fetch the ball from the other side of the boundary.
At 159 for 2 in the 28th over we looked like we had a good platform to push our team score closer to 300. Unfortunately that was not the case. Ravipal, Viral and Sonu had a tough time with the bounce and got out in quick succession leaving us at 164 for 5 in the 30th over. At this point we would have settled with anything over 210. Ashu had different plans, while Ravi P was adjusting to the wicket Ashu kept classily belting the bad balls keeping a very healthy run rate. He finally got out to a ball that bounced from good length and took the edge to their keeper for a very well made 97 of 94 balls in the 37th over. This is some serious dedicated batting to nearly carry his bat through.
Ravi P was joined by Pratik who kept the scoreboard ticking with quick singles and twos before Ravi was given Leg before wicket, most of us thought it was a very bad decision. Pratik was joined by Deepak and later by Venkat to take us to a very respectful total of 249.
For Colonials the pick of the bowlers was Parth Patel picking up 5 wickets.
We started the defense with Sonu and Jagan. Sonu like he always does hit the right spots and bowled a nagging line at teasing length. The opener gloved a ball in the first over to Ravi P and waited for the umpire. Unfortunately the umpire was not sure and gave him the benefit of doubt. Jagan on the other hand had trouble finding his line and ended up giving 15 wides in his spell. After this there was not much drama as the proceedings were quite clinical. The spinners Viral, Deepak, Venkat and Pratik were dead on turning and constantly beating the batsmen.
After a few wickets Colonials had made up their mind that the chase would be a tall order and they would try and play out 40 overs. They were successful in their plan.
We feilded well without many misfields and NO catches being dropped with 10 fielders, Madhu came back to help us out after the 25th over despite not being well. Both the Ravis kept very well considering the nature of the wicket. TC's catch of Prabhjot's bowling in the first slip was very photogenic. Ravi P held 3 good catches behind the stumps, and finally the man with the Golden Arm(TC) got a wicket of the very last ball of his first over.
Special mentions
Viraal's Sasu Ma for the excellent food.
Viraal for the videography and editing (I am sure he is going to make a gujju movie one day with all the experienceđ)
All the folks who got the coolers to keep the drinks cool on a hot day.
All the folks who kept following our score despite the World cup and Wimbledon finals.
The opposition team for sharing their Planters mixed nuts with us.
The Goods
Great top order batting
We batted 40 overs
We fielded well with excellent backup all around
Places to improve
This applies only to Jagan as I had the lion share of extras(15 of the total 35 given)
Need to build more partnerships. Should avoid collapses. If a wicket falls we should reset quickly and not let another wicket fall at least for the next 5 overs.
Sledging should not get personal.
Hoping we bat 40 in the next game if we bat first and not let the other team bat 40 whether we bowl or bat first.
The MOM for the day is clearly Ashu for his master class knock of 97 with which he almost single handedly batted the opposition out of the game.
