Washington Cricket Club Lost By 31 Runs

Match report With Kal and Palash not available for today we had Viraal as the rookie 😉 captain for WCC in WMCB after our come back into the league. Thanks to his rookie luck we lost the toss and this was probably Viraal's first toss loss this season. Mavericks opted to Bat first. The pitch kept the ball low and kinda stopped on you. The outfield was crackling fast. If the ball passed the fielder it just raced away to the boundary. Jagan started the proceedings in an eventful first over where we dropped their opener Nauman and had the centurian Ravinder slash a thick edge over gully. We had Prabhjot start from the other end who bowled a disciplined line and was very unlucky not to get a wicket. The openers played aggressive with some good shots and some edges that flew to the boundary in no time. Monil replaced Jagan and bowled a decent line without a breakthrough. Viral replaced Monil and looked very menacing with the ball. Elango replaced Prabhjot and was easily the pick of our bowlers today. He shaved his thick Moustache which gave him an aerodynamic advantage 😉 He bowled 8 overs on the trot which was mixed with some very precise yorkers, a nagging line and a very well thought mix bag of slower balls. He got the first breakthrough by going through the defenses of Nauman. Viral dismissed Waqas who settled in well. Elango got the next wicket of Nosherwan who was caught brilliantly at point by Monil. Elango got the next wicket of Etishaam with a perfect Yorker and got the next wicket of Wajaat with the help of a very well judged catch at long off by Ashuthosh.

Viraal was replaced by Ankit who used the pitch conditions to his advantage where he constantly kept tossing the ball and hitting the right spots. At this point having to recover from a brilliant spell by Elango, Mavericks batsmen Ravinder and Nohmi cautiously played out Viraal and Ankit without taking many risks and sweeping for the odd boundary. Venkat was introduced and he bowled very well flighting and turning the ball. He picked up 2 good wickets of Nohmi and Sardar who have a history of slogging in WMCB. They were out to some good bowling by Venkat and very well judged catches by Elango and Viraal. On the other end Viraal got Mandeep and Yasir Leg before. While we kept getting wickets from one end the other end Ravinder kept pushing the scoreboard by finding gaps and taking calculated risks. He was the last to get out to Prabhjot for a very good catch by Tarun. Ravinder batted very sensibly for a well deserved 100 and seeing Mavericks to a respectable score of 196.

A special shout-out to Tarun for some excellent wicket keeping for 2 sessions where he had to deal with the low bounce and 2 paced nature of the wicket. The last session Ravipal kept wickets and he looked very comfortable.

With a lightning fast outfield and a good batting lineup our strategy was to try and bat 40 overs. Ashutosh and Avinash started proceedings. Ashutosh looked in great touch middling the ball from the get go and putting the bad and not so bad balls to the boundary. Avinash was unlucky to get run out without even facing a ball. Ashutosh was unfortunate to be given caught behind for a well made 14. Looking at his forms and starts a big score from him is around the corner. Tarun settled in well but mistimed a full toss ball to be caught at mid off. Elango, Ravipal and Monil looked in good form but fell very quickly leaving is at 62 for 6. Viraal and Prabhjot had a mini partnership going but Viraal got out to a mistimed full toss at long on. Prabhjot picked up from where he left off from the last game and looked in great form to see this game through. After a well made 33 he was out of a bottom edged ball to the keeper. Jagan was out caught at long on. At 112 for 9 Venkat and Ankit played very sensibly putting the odd ball to the boundary and some good running between the wickets. They had an awesome 50 run partnership with a very well made 41 by Venkat.

We fell short by 31 runs. Considering how fast the outfield was and taking Venkat, Prabhjot, Viraal and Ankit's batting as an example we fell short by another partnership. Great comeback by the bowlers where at one point they were on track for a score over 250 with the fire power they had in the lower middle order. A rough day at office but looking at WCC's history in WMCB we have had great runs in the past through play offs where we have had pretty ordinary starts to the season. Different players are coming into form either with the bat or ball. Hopefully we peak at the right time and have a good run for the remaining season.
