Gladiators v Washington Cricket Club WCC-WMCB on Sat 07 Jun 2014 at 9:30 AM
Washington Cricket Club Won by 80 Runs

Match report WCC enters the game as the only unbeaten team remaining in the league and the onus is now on Ankit, who is returning to cricket after a while and also leading the side in the absence of Viral, to keep the winning streak going.Ankit won the toss and elected to bat on a lovely sunny day.

WCC opened with Sam and Raj. Sam has been the main stay of the WCC batting this season and he has scored in all the games, until now.The in form Sam(4) fell early to a slow and low full toss when he tried to play it on the on side but only managing to present with a catch to the bowler.Sailesh, one of the best batsman I have seen joined Raj, who has also been in great touch this season. Raj soon found his rhythm and was on song scoring freely. The six he hit over mid-off was a treat to watch. Sailesh(8) could not adjust to a heavy bat and fell trying to cut the ball and the scoreboard read 32/2 in 6 overs.Thoufiq was in next.Raj(23) looked all set for a big innings but a sudden rush of blood made him slash one over the infield but the ball went high off his top edge and the fielder some how managed to hang on to the ball after juggling it twice.WCC was in a spot of bother as they were 47/3 in 9 overs. Shounak(1) joined Thoufiq to stabilize the innings but fell early.WCC were in trouble with 68/4 in 13. Although the runs have been flowing WCC was losing wickets at regular intervals. Kal joined Thoufiq who was playing a calculated and a risk free innings. Partnership was the need of the hour for WCC. Both Thoufiq and Kal were looking good against a good off and leg spin attack and looked set for a good partnership. They defended the good ones and put away the loose ones. With a nagging foot injury Thoufiq(41) tried his best to concentrate but the injury got the best of him and he was out caught for a well made 41 trying to loft one over the covers.Madhu(5) joined Kal but did not last long and was adjudged LBW to a ball in my opinion would have missed the off stump.Jagdish(1) was in next and in the very next over got out stumped. Ankit came in next and Kal(22) was adjudged LBW, another dubious decision.Deep trouble at 127/8 in 25.Jaaga came in with an attitude to bat long but Ankit(6) fell on the other end.142/9 and reaching 150 looked questionable. But Parth who was making his debut for WCC with the bat, hit some of the hardest and flattest sixes I have seen.Anything that was marginally short was pulled ferociously. His little cameo ensured a respectable total for WCC.Parth's(28 n.o) entertaining innings was cut short by yet another poor LBW decision. Yet again this season WCC failed to play the full 40 overs and were allout for 176 in 32 overs. Game on.

The reliable pair of Jagga and Sam opened the attack for WCC. Sam was continuing his form with the ball also and bowled an impeccable line and length. Although WCC did not get a breakthrough both the bowlers bowled a tight spell. Realizing that picking wickets is the key, Ankit introduced spin on both ends.Madhu responded by trapping the batsman in front and on the other end Sailesh got rid of the very dangerous looking Raza courtesy of a very well judged catch by Sam at square leg.Emon was playing the waiting game, waiting for the loose balls and dispatching them and Richardson was trying to play out Madhu. Ankit quickly brought himself on and got rid of Richardson, a huge wicket.Soon after, Parth claimed Emon to a sharp reflex catch by Kal. Despite the match being almost in the pocket for WCC, they kept the pressure on and kept picking wickets. Ankit struck again twice in the same over, getting Enayet stumped and Rizwan to a good catch by Shounak in the deep. Jagdish then got rid of Javed and Atif. Ankit then got Latif to sky a ball which was nicely taken by Jagdish and castled their # 11 to claim a very well deserved 5-for. Overall it was a very tidy performance on the field by WCC dropping only one catch. I hope we keep up this performance in the field for the rest of the season.

Although we are winning by good margins, our batsman should show more resolve and capitalize on the starts they are getting. We should make sure we play the full 40 overs. With the depth we have in our batting, not being able to play 40 overs should be considered a sin.
