Match report Washington tames the Lions

Washington CC starts their 2014 campaign in style with a comfortable 63 run victory over the Punjab Lions.Everybody was pleasantly surprised to see a fast outfield and without knee high grass.Good presence of mind by Palash and some hard work by Pb Lions ensured that the game would start relatively quickly.The pitch was crumbling like a cookie and looked very uneven.Nevertheless mat was laid, boundaries marked and both teams were ready for their season opener.

Pb Lions won the toss and to nobodies surprise invited Washington to bat.Raj and
Sameer opened the proceedings for Washington.Both started off cautiously on an
uneven pitch.Raj soon found his form and looked in fine touch middling almost everything.Sameer on the other hand was taking his time and the pitch did not help his cause.The openers gave WCC a steady start before Raj(13) edged one to the keeper.In walked the reigning best batsman of WCC, TC and as always looked very comfortable.Pb Lions bowled a disciplined line and length and very few extras were conceded in the first 10 or so overs.All that changed with the arrival of TC at the crease as the left and right hand combination messed up the bowlers' rhythm. While TC was taking his time to settle down, Sameer started to get into his grove and the runs started flowing for WCC.Both batsman were milking the bowlers for runs and completely against the run of play Sameer(21) got cleaned up.In came one of the two debutants for WCC, Thoufiq who looked in pristine touch from the get go.TC and Thoufiq were building a nice little partnership that came to an end when TC uncharacteristically hit one in the air that was safely pouched by the fielder. Every batsman was getting a start and no one could really get a big score.This trend continued when Kal(12) played one on to his stumps.The onus was now on the might middle order of WCC to get them to a winning score.Rajiv,after his dominating performance in the practice game was promoted ahead of Viral to take advantage of the slow bowlers.Rajiv did not disappoint and he hit two lusty blows out of the park.He looked solid defending the good balls and putting away the bad ones.The partnership between Thoufiq and Rajiv looked threatening but it came to an abrupt end when Thoufiq was run out.Viral came in next.Rajiv who looked well set for a big one got out LBW and in the same over Viral got bowled to a low kept ball.Wickets were tumbling and WCC was reeling with the scoreboard reading 140(approx) for 7.Pb Lions were on top as the mighty middle order of WCC faltered.Palsh was sent in for some damage control but the wickets continued to fall when Jagan skied one trying to up the scoring.Mrunal offered brief resistance but was run out.The last man Fawad was left stranded when Palash hit one straight to the fielder at square leg.WCC were
all out for 162 in 38 overs.Overall it was a disappointing batting performance
after failing to play the full 40 overs.At one stage we were looking at a score in excess of 200.But full credit to Pb. Lions who bowled sensibly and fielded
brilliantly.The match was not over yet as the Pb. Lions had to chase 163.

WCC started with Jagan and Sameer.Jagan was his usual self bowling impeccable line and length and gave nothing away.WCC needed some early wickets to stay ahead in the game and Jagga gave the breakthrough when he castled one of their openers with a beauty.Then came an India U-14 player, Puneet and played a little cameo.He hit 3 massive sixers two off Sameer and the one he hit Jagga was a delight to watch. He picked a good length ball and whacked it straight over the bowlers' head.But Jagga came back strong and knocked the middle stump off in the same over.Pb Lions were two down and the very dangerous looking Puneet was back in the hut.Pb Lions hurt themselves when their other opener was run out, courtesy of Palash.WCC were picking up wickets at regular intervals.Mrunal was introduced into the attack and he bowled a lovely economical spell and picked up a wicket.The only other batsman to offer any resistance was cleaned up by Viral, who bowled a tight line keeping the batsman in check and picking up 3 wickets.Sameer after an expensive first spell bowled a good second spell picking up two wickets.Pb Lions were wrapped up under 100 in about 20 overs.Terrific bowling effort by WCC.

Although the batting was a disappointment, bowling and fielding ensured that WCC
start off the season with a W.

More impressive than the victory was the commitment shown by all the members of the team by being at the ground around 9.30 and completing the warm ups and some
catching.Kudos to the whole team and I hope that this trend continues throughout
the season.
