Washington Cricket Club WCC-WMCB v Windies CC on Sun 17 May 2015 at 3:00 PM
Washington Cricket Club Lost By 6 wickets
Match report
Metro was the venue for the last T20 league game. Having already clinched the #1 seed and steamrolling all it's opponents, WCC was brimming with confidence as they took on Windies, a team fighting for a playoff berth.
On a hot and humid day Ankit won the toss and chose to bat first.WCC opened with Ashu and Viral.I am not sure if it was Windies' strategy for WCC but they started with their slower bowlers and if it indeed was their strategy then it worked excellently well.Ashu(0) was a victim of a very tight first over which was a wicket maiden. After the early loss, Thoufiq joined Viral.Windies bowled
with such discipline that they conceded only 2 wides. After 5 overs ,their opening bowlers' figures read 3-2-2-1. The fact that it was a heavy outfield also did not help WCC's cause.WCC looked to move on from the slow start and had a couple of decent overs in between when Viral struck a few meaty blows.Just when both Viral and Thoufiq were getting into their grove, Viral(26) got
runout. WCC was around 45-50/2 around the 10 over mark.Raj joined Thoufiq and the Windies again pulled the scoring rate back after the wicket.Thoufiq(26) got caught trying to accelerate and Kal joined Raj. WCC was in a spot of bother at around 60 in 15 overs.Raj(8) perished and Kal(17)soon followed trying to hit one out of the park.Apart from Jagga's(9 n.o) huge six WCC's tail couldn't do
much against a tight Windies bowling attack and could manage only 94 in their 20. This, I believe is the lowest score by WCC in a T20 in the past 3 years and is a huge challenge to defend a below par score.
WCC went to field with a lot of pride at stake,as it never lost a T20 game since 2012.The only way to defend this total is to take wickets, a lot of wickets and quickly as well.Jagga and Ankit shared the new ball and they both bowled their hearts out.At the 8 over mark, Windies were around 20/2, remarkable spells by both Jagga and Ankit. With the asking rate around 6 rpo in the next 12 overs it was game on.Jags was introduced into the attack and he responded by picking up two wickets. At the 12 over mark Windies were around 40/4.With an ace (Viral) up it's sleeve, WCC looked to be the favorites. But it was not to be as their captain walked in and whacked a quick fire 39 well
supported by his partner. They ran hard and connected everything in their reach and everything they connected went of the park.Viral had a very rare bad day with the ball as WCC failed to defend a paltry 94.First loss in WCL and first T20 loss in 3 years.
Despite the loss, the way WCC fought was commendable. They bowled and fielded with intensity and that is what it takes to win championships.Despite the poor showing with the bat by WCC,I have no doubt that we are the team to beat in D-II and I am sure we will bounce back hard in a couple of weeks time when the main league starts.
A special note of appreciation goes to the Windies for their fair play and sportsmanship. One of their fielders caught Viral on the boundary and signaled it a six.No one knew, including the umpire and Viral, who started walking back to the pavilion. In another incident, Thoufiq when taking a single fell outside the crease and their wicket keeper despite having the ball in his hands did
not run him out.I take my hat off to both these individuals who showed true spirit of the game.
