On a beautiful Sunday morning Washington reached the Woodmoor ground around 10:30 AM eagerly waiting for a perfect day of cricket. The Baltimore team seemed to be prepared for a great day under the sun. Then, the wait for the umpire started. In spite of numerous attempts by the representatives of both the teams and WCL, the umpire, was unreachable. There were a lot of discussions with the Baltimore team to start the game with umpires from the batting team acting as the umpires. Baltimore team was reluctant to pursue this option, giving the impression all along that they did not want to play the undefeated team. Finally John (Baltimore team manager) was able to convince the Baltimore team to use the batting team’s umpires and use the official umpire whenever he arrived. The game finally started around 1:00 PM without the official WCL umpire.
Washington CC openers Viral and Sam, started cautiously with Baltimore opening bowlers maintaining a good pace and line. The partnership was beginning to accelerate after laying the groundwork when Ankit adjudged Sam LBW when he failed to notice the inside edge onto the pads. After the fall of Viral shortly afterwards, Thoufiq and TC kept rotating the strike before a mini collapse in the middle order saw quick dismissals of Thoufiq, TC, Raj and Pratik, thanks primarily to the good line and length bowling by the young Aimal Khan. Our rate at this point was around 5.0 per over. This brought Ashu and Rajiv on the scene and they just laid into the Baltimore bowling attack and provided the much needed boost to the scoring rate. After the fall of Ashu, Jagga joined Rajiv in the middle and hit the Baltimore bowlers to all parts of the park. Ashu, Rajiv and Jagga took our score to the 152.
The umpire, finally arrived at the ground during the innings break and took over the umpiring duties. WCC opened the bowling with the ever reliable hands of Jagga and Sam. The opening batsmen from Baltimore were quite sedated in response to the quality bowling by Jagga and Sam, with Sam earning a maiden over. Jagga had their opening batsmen in all kinds of trouble and was rewarded with the wicket of Muhammad Ali. Rohan Hope, the No. 3, was in a quite an aggressive mood and got some good shots to boundary after Jagga was denied a plumb leg before by the umpire and a dolly dropped by Akshar. Viral was brought in to curb Rohan’s attacking cricket and dutifully provided the breakthrough when Ashu caught Rohan at the long on boundary. After this it was just a clinical performance by the WCC bowling unit to finish the innings 58 runs ahead while conceding only 5 wides. Raj took 2 great catches and rest of the team providing good fielding support to affect 2 run outs. Baltimore never helped their cause by mismanaging their batsman. They missed a trick by sending Gregory Alleyne, Ven Heralal and Abid Hussain, the better batsmen in the team, after Aimal and Winston Skerritt. Baltimore has a great future in Aimal Khan and Ruthvik Gali , if they manage and guide these youngsters properly.
