Washington Cricket Club Lost by 3 wickets

Match report WMCB 2013 40 Over finals!!

Two of the most consistent teams in WMCB this year namely Washington and VA Lions were going to fight it out for the most prized Championship Trophy!! Déjà vu effect as these teams played the 2012 Championship game and Washington found itself on the losing side. This year was different as Washington beat the young Lions convincingly to claim the Super-8 Trophy.

Lions won the toss and elected to field first. Although they prefer to defend their mammoth totals this time couple of their players would be away for some part of the game. Hence the change in strategy probably a well thought out one too!!

Washington, happy to bat first started the proceedings with dependable Tarun and explosive Vijay. Tarun (04) after a cautious start fell prey to Adil yet again this season and Raj stepped in but didn’t last as long as Washington expected. Adnan bowled a terrific opening over at Raj (00) to get rid of him, the ball swung right in and crashed into the stumps. On the other hand Vijay played effortlessly and kept the scoreboard ticking despite the loss of two early wickets as if nothing had happened. Anil joined the party and had some damage control to do. Vijay (40) who looked rock solid had Ankit to deal with and whacked a ball onto the leg-side finding a lone fielder Amit who didn’t make a mess of the powerfully hit flat shot. It was the end of a terrific knock.

At the 15 over water break Washington were 63 for 5. Steady start just like the rest of the season with a deep batting lineup.

RaviTeja the semi-final game changer joined Anil but Ankit made their lives difficult with his slow bowling. Soon RaviTeja (07) playing Ankit for the first time plays again like many do for the spin and gets a top-edge that was easily taken by Shahrukh at short cover. Sameer joins Anil and both play cautiously to rebuild the innings. Sharukh so far wicketless made life difficult for the duo. Anil (17) tried going after Anirudh instead got stumped as the ball turned just enough to miss the willow. Lions especially Sunil were electric with their ground fielding like always but their catching needed some help but no harm done. Every single they deny creates pressure and showcases why even at this level ground fielding is so important.

Washington looked in trouble with just 84 on the board around the 23rd over mark with 5 top wickets down.

Soon Viral shows up and plays a crucial captain’s knock to score a quick yet sensible 40 off just 28 balls till Ankit-Sunil combo inflict a stumping right after the 30 over break.

Washington was now 137 for 6 in 31 overs.

The in-form Kalyan walks in and alongwith Sameer he looks to capitalize on the last 9 overs. This time Washington was scoring run a ball to inch closer to the magical 200 mark. Soon Shahrukh claims Kalyan (20) and Shabir puts an end to Sameer’s well made (36). With an over or two to go Jagan and Palash try to make the most out of it with Jagan (12) hitting two lusty blows that fetched 20 odd runs in the last two overs. Palash (01) runs himself out trying to bring Jagan on strike and last man Ankit walks out to stay not out.

With 40 overs done Washington posted a decent 205 on the board. Probably 20 runs short given their batting lineup but again this is a Championship game and pressure while chasing would be enormous.

Lions start of with their attacking pair Deepak and Anirudh. On the other hand Washington depends on Jagan and Ankit to get them the much needed breakthrough. Batsmen started of in style with first couple of overs going for 16 odd runs but bowlers have the last laugh. Anirudh (06) started off with a SIX over extra-cover against Jagan who came back with a beauty and keeper Kalyan claimed the first one. Deepak (09) trying to dominate, stepped out to Ankit and yorked himself just to get stumped by Kalyan who had a split second to claim his second victim.

Great start for Washington but a long batting order to go. Junaid and Akash start the consolidation effort. Mr. Dependable for Lions Akash played his natural game and waited patiently for the bad balls. Junaid on the other hand was playing to the plan, hold one end up. Junaid (17 of 36) after doing his part departs to a sensational catch by Sameer off Vijay.

At this time Lions were 68 for 3 in 16 overs.

Amit rightly comes in as Lions wanted to bump their run-rate not trying to leave too many for the lower order. Washington almost had Amit early but a dropped catch gave a dangerous batsman the license to kill which he did by whacking 39 off just 31 balls till Sameer got rid of him in the 28th over with 145 already on the board.

Might seem that the damage was already done but the game was still not over!! But unfortunately except Sameer none of the Washington bowlers had a good day with the ball. Bowling wasn’t that bad either. The sad part was five great balls were followed by one terrible ball, plus the extras just added salt to our wounds and ground fielding just leaked runs.

Anyway back to the game, Akash (43) was joined by Sharukh as Lions were still waiting on Adil and Ankit to get back from a friend's wedding :). Lions lose Akash LBW off Jagan. Well played Akash, yet another mature innings. By now Adil was back and it was run a ball situation somewhat but Lions had wickets in hand.

At the 34 over mark Lions were 179 for 5.

So with 26 required of 36 balls and five quality wickets in hand. Task at hand looked pretty easy for the Lions but Washington bowlers hit right back. Next 3 overs yield only 7 runs and Washington are back in the game claiming two crucial wickets of Adil (18) and Sunil (0). RaviTeja, Sameer and Jagan were looking to bring it back for Washington.

So three more overs to go and 19 more runs to defend. It was anybody’s game now!!

On the other hand Sharukh (33 off 38) continued playing sensibly waiting for the bad ball and Ankit (09 off 13) too followed suit instead of going for the biggies. Tables turned Lions amassed 23 runs in the next two overs and it was game over with an over to spare.

Championship game pressure was on both sides but Lions handled it better that day to seal the deal. One bad ball every over, extras and some terrible ground fielding haunted Washington throughout their second innings. Although we did well to post 205 and made a terrific comeback towards the end but it wasn’t enough.

Congratulations VA Lions for holding onto the silverware!! Well deserved.

And well done Washington for a yet another great season.

A loss does not mean that the world comes to an end as long as we learn from our mistakes and work towards fixing it. Our catching and ground fielding has been appalling all throughout the season so let’s get back to the nets and fix it. To me this was the best season Washington has ever had but let’s try to make it better. 2014 shall be ours !!
