Match report
T20 Semifinals Washington vs United, that's what it boiled down to anyways!!
Bad blood in the past ensured that a spicy affair was on the cards when these two met in the semi finals. Rain clouds hovered over the skies threatening to pour anytime, when the toss occurred. Despite the fact that United just came out of the field in their QF game against Mavericks, they chose to go to field again. Risky choice, given the fact that WCC prefers to set targets and defend them successfully, most of the times (ouch).
Vijay Reddy, who has been a revelation as an opener started things in his usual style. Shaunak was back in the hut without troubling the scorers trying to hit across the line. Anil joined Vijay and both kept the score board moving at a brisk pace. After scoring 16, Vijay holed out and Viral came to the crease at the end of powerplay. Manoj fired an almost yorker on the middle stump and Viral found a maverick way of dispatching it over square fine leg boundary, sailing into the trees. It was such a delight to watch as Viral had walked in already decided to give Manoj a welcome. At 57/1, in the seventh over, Anil tried to glide one past the keeper and ended up edging it to the keeper. Palash joined Viral and many asked why. Their question was answered couple overs later when Palash was cleaned up by a bowler who went for 33 in 3 overs. Palash saved bowler's face by playing few (read several) dot balls.
As there was only one official umpire for the game, batting side provided leg umpire and it gave already complaining side, lot more reasons to do so. It does surprise one indeed on how a fielder on long on boundary knows about a run-out on batting end. Few more snide remarks and it got already fired up Viral to get into the zone of destruction.
Kal joined Viral at the crease and things just went berserk. Viral was in an explosive mood and Kal followed every move. If Viral hit three sixes on the trot, Kal dispatched a short pitched delivery into covers boundary, still gaining height, while it ventured into the forest. It was hit with so much disdain that the fielders disappeared and didnt feel like coming back on to the field.
Viral celebrated Sehwag's birthday by putting his own style of fireworks. 83 runs resulted from a mere 33 deliveries peppered with countless number of sixes. Some of these shots were hit with so much power that all boundary fielders saw/heard was a whirring sound when the ball was sailing several feet over their heads, into the woods. Sound of willow on leather never sounded sweeter. I have no clue on how Viral generates so much power with such a small backlift and his capability to hit six after six without getting tired. His innings was a treat to watch.
Kal scored 43 from just five overs and hit his share of clean drives, pulls and lofted sixes. He has been WCC's Mr. Dependable and delivers every single time. His brilliant knock was overshadowed due to extensive fireworks from the other end. Rajiv thundered back to the games with 17 from just 5 deliveries and WCC set 205 for the loss of 9 wickets.
Chasing a mammoth total, clouds threatening to ruin the game gave United a target of 50 in five overs, or so they thought. They decided to come out all guns blazing but ran into Mr consistent Jagan. His accuracy and penetration are second to none as he cleaned up Sushant, the most important batsman in United's arsenal. At one point, it seemed that wickets and runs were neck to neck as scorecard read 3 for 3 after 3.
If Sushant got going, he is capable of running away with the game but today was not that day as Jagan wouldn't let that happen. Only ten runs were contributed by 4 out of 5 top batsmen, thanks to Viral cleaning up Raj and Vijay effecting a smart run out in Azhar style along with fiery spell from Jaggu dada.
Manoj and Anoop had a partnership going and they seemed to be in hunt, thanks to generous catch dropping by some senior members of WCC, who should have retired few years ago. Until 12th over, their chase was on target and Jagdish Akula decided to clean up Manoj. Anoop was handicapped due to a hamstring injury picked up during the QF game and that didn't help their cause either. He scored a quick 29 before being bowled by Jagdish A.
Jagan ended up with 4 overs 2 for 12 but the impact he delivered was way more than the figures reflect. Viral was back to his normal self for claiming couple scalps as well as being economical. Sam was called to bowl and despite being sick he just gave 10 runs from 2 overs. Sam is Mr. perfect when it comes to execution as he delivers time after time, with bat or ball.
Batting late in the day, when clouds wouldnt let any sunshine through resulted in not-so bright light conditions. Batting second was a bad choice and weather only helped convince of that fact. As a result, Garnett asked Viral to bowl just the spinners but still United managed only 114 from 16 overs.
Shaunak will remember this game forever as he took three wickets giving just 1 run. Any bowler would be proud to have those stats and due to highly successful season with the bat, Shaunak has decided to become a bowler, now.
WCC delivered as a team and fired in both batting and bowling. Rajiv is back from vacation and delivered from bat as well as behind the stumps. Our fielding leaves a lot to be desired and demands an increased number of fielding practice sessions next season.
A word for those, who are quick to criticize the umpires: These are the people who are helping cricket happen. They are facilitating the game that runs in our veins. They are keeping our dream, our passion alive and kicking in these neck of woods. Let us walk a mile in their shoes first before we critique them. Let us try to do their job for a short bit before passing a judgement. If you dont like something, step up and be the change.
