Washington Cricket Club WCC-WMCB v Punjab Lions on Sat 01 Jun 2013 at 10:00 AM
Washington Cricket Club Won By 7 Wickets
Match report
After almost a month of WCC not being in action due to rain and WMCB management, it so happened the team we played a month ago was the team we played next.
On a hot sweltering day at Oxon Hill, Punjab Lions won the toss and chose to bat. As usual Anil and Murali opened for us, keeping it tight and disciplined. Not allowed to hit freely coupled with good field placement by Viraal, the first batsman to go lofted Anil straight to deepish midwicket where Anil Bhai (not to be confused with Anil Doc) neatly judged a skier. Doc quickly got rid of the other opener befuddling him with one that decked away collecting the off stump on it's way. Continued good bowling ensued as Samir got No.4 plumb lbw and Sharath had No.5, also lbw to a ball that came in to which the batsman shouldered arms. The height was suspect but when you shoulder arms, you give the umpire license to kill. No.3 who played an unorthodox but effective innings that far got out playing an unorthodox stroke for Sharath to juggle a caught and bowled before couching it. At the first break, P.Lions were struggling with half their side out.
Post break, Lions' No.6 (also their strike bowler) came in and smashed it around. Shammy belted a few sixes while the batsmen at the other end were being picked up by Sameer and Viraal. Janty lofted Sam deep at midwicket. Anil Bhai held on to a tough high swirler, the kind most people drop in this league. No. 8 couldn't fathom Viral and offered Rajiv a simple catch behind and No. 9 tamely chipped Sameer to short cover. No. 10 was gobbled up lbw by Viraal. At the other end though, courtesy some mighty blows, Shammy had raced to 43. Doc was brought back on and he claimed the batsman who tried to hoick him. Tarun held on to a flat hard one at midwicket and the innings was over. In the 23rd over, P.Lions were all out for 105. A great effort by WCC bowlers and fielders.
Chasing a low total is always tricky, be it club level or international level.
Belter turned Bolter Shammy bowled quick and accounted for Raj (2) with a fast away swinger which was held at wide 2nd slip in the 3rd over. Sharath joined Sameer and the pair settled things down. Sam who is in good form carried on and played fluently. Sharath smacked Janty for a couple of boundaries but with the score in the 40s, charged down to the leg spinner who had just come on, missed the turner and was stumped for 10. Tarun joined Sam and the pair took it further closer to the target. Sam, now well set, often danced down and lofted the bowlers and Tarun smacked one from the spinner straight over his head. With 30 odd runs to get, he got out mistiming a full toss to long on for 8. Anil Bhai joined Sameer who reached a well made half century (52*). Anil Bhai finished off the match in style, lofting one over extra cover for a six. The target was breached in 23 overs.
A clinical, comfortable chase and second successive win over P.Lions. An important one, this game being a Super 8 game.
Next match: vs. Trindies at Oxon Hill.
