Washington Cricket Club WCC-WMCB v Crescent on Sun 10 Jun 2012 at 10:00 AM
Washington Cricket Club Won By 6 wickets
Match report
On a blistering Sunday, Washington CC (134/4 in 25) commandingly defeated Crescent CC (128 in 36.1) by 6 wickets in a repeat performance.
There were a couple reasons for choosing to bat first on a non-wet, non-windy morning. The chief among them was the heat. On a day when temperatures touched 95 deg F, Palash did the right thing by opting to field first on a milder (only comparatively) morning than in the baking heat of the afternoon. Jagan and Sameer opened the bowling for us this time. Jagan bowled a good line and length not giving anything away. Sameer at the other end bowled a virtually unplayable first spell. Moving the ball away and late, he had the batsmen in all sorts of trouble. He picked up Nasir (0), Ammar (5) and Zakhir (1) in quick succession, the first two edging to Ravi and Jereesh (a fine catch at slip) and Zakhir finally and funnily given LBW after a long delay. Why it was funny, I really have no idea how to express. You had to be there. Hilarious dismissal deja vu: Check.
Crescent were tottering at barely something for 3. They got a mini partnership going when Sharath was brought into the attack. He struck in his first over, trapping the batsman with a yorker. Ankit, who bowled a controlled, disciplined spell all through and being the mainstay of our middle over bowling, had Kashif (20) caught by Jereesh again and Crescent were 50 odd for 5. Sharath effected a brilliant direct hit from point to run out Yasir (10). Sameer came back to pick up another one, bowled this time. As in the last game, the opponent’s lower order batted well, taking them past the three figure mark. Lower order sensible batting : Check.
Sharath came back to break the 8th wicket partnership with the help of Palash, who took a tough steepler at point. The ball went miles in the air and it was a fine effort by the skip. Sameer came back for his final over and off the very last ball of his spell, yorked the batsman to bag a fifer. A thoroughly well deserved 5 wicket haul. Jereesh, in the 4th over of his pacy spell which had the batsmen jumping, picked up the final Crescent wicket again caught superbly by Taran at long on. The ball was hit hard and flat and he had to make ground as well, which he did. Crescent all out for 128 off 36.1.
Having to chase a 130-ish total in 40 overs: Check.
With the confidence of having chased a similar total last game, our batting started well, with Tarun and Sameer doing what was needed. Picking up singles and twos with the odd boundary, they put on 30 odd for the first wicket. Tarun (10) got caught at mid-wicket trying to pull a short one. Raj came at No.3 and picked up where he left off last time. Timing the ball sweetly and crisply, he and Sameer rattled along taking the score to 70 plus when Sameer (30) missed one behind his legs and was bowled off their left arm spinner. An all round effort from him. Sharath went in at No.4 and started scoring freely along with Raj, who smashed a Six over midwicket off their leggie. Stroking the ball at will, it seemed they would take us through but with 32 to get, Sharath (18) missed a slow ball yorker and was bowled. Kalyan (7) went in next and smashed a one-bounce 4 over point before falling LBW. Ravi went in and with 22 to get, Raj and him took us through without further damage – Ravi finishing it off with a six over mid wicket. Closing the game with a Six over mid-wicket : Check. Raj finished not out on 41 and Ravi on 10. Washington completed the chase in 25 overs. A 25-ish overs chase: Check.
Again, credit to the bowling and fielding for setting up the game and to the batsmen for chasing it professionally.
WCC bled well again!
Next game: vs Damascus at Oxon Hill.
