Washington Cricket Club Won By 3 wickets
Match report
Team:
We are playing the sixth game of the season. We lost the toss, in hindsight it was a good toss to lose, as understandably Maryland opted to bat first.
We started the opening bowling with Murali and Sharath, right from the first ball of the game till the end, no one knew how the ball will behave, either the bowlers or the batsman, that was the state of the pitch.
Both the opening bowlers bowled decently without give any width to the batsman and they tried all sort of shots and just met the thin air. Sharath(1/13) got the first blood. And then Joseph and Jeeresh were introduced and Jeeresh(2/25) made a quick impact by removing the opening batsman with a full throttle ball. At first break MD was 34/2 in 10 Overs. Anil(31) started playing some aggressive shots. The other new batsman were intent on scoring quickly, but Joseph(2/12) had other thoughts and bowled a little slower ball and got a wicket, courtesy a very good well judged catch by Kalyan. At second break they were 84/4 in 20 overs. MD was well placed to score more than 150+ runs at that stage, but we had other plans and Ankit and Sunil both got into the action and both of them bowled superbly to peg back the MD scoring and ended up with 2/25 and 3/20. Excellent spin bowling from our bowlers. Their last 6 wickets fell for around 38 runs. MD ended up with 121 All Out in 31.1 overs.
Washington started with new opening pair of Murali and Kalyan, the chase was not going to be easy due to the nature of the pitch, wouldn't even call it a cricket pitch. Anyways, we needed singles and doubles to get over the line, Murali and Kalyan played cautiously as the new ball and pitch making a dangerous combo, Murali was the first to get out, as he could not keep the ball on the ground and instead gave a simple catch. Raj joined Kalyan and started scoring freely, but Kalyan(10) tried to hit a ball out of the park instead he was caught well at the edge of the boundary. Sharath and Raj were cruising coolly at the first break, we were 30/2 in 10 overs. Sharath(8) was given LBW and Jeeresh(1) was promoted up the order, but could not get going and was bowled soon. Ravi was next to get in and he along with Raj ensured they will take singles and doubles. Both of them rotated the strike well and always kept the eye on the ball and not to let the focus down. At second break we were around 78/4 in 20 Overs. Raj(28) was carrying his form from the previous games and played a sensible knock before a direct hit from long-on cut his innings short. Now the onus to take the team to win fell on the shoulders of Palash and Ravi and we needed 30+ runs. Match was interestingly poised as both the teams had a good chance of victory. Scoring freely was out of the question, since the bowlers themselves didn't knew where to pitch the ball correctly. The pitch deteriorated in the later part of the innings. But Palash(1) could not keep the ball down and offered a simple catch. Ankit(4) joined Ravi(23) and both played very cautiously and took singles and doubles and tied the score on 121.
And Ravi played a rash shot to end the game and instead gave a catch to long-off. Ankit made the winning run and we reached the target in 33 overs.
Overall a good batting on an awful pitch and kudos to our bowlers and fielders for putting a fine show on the ground. Still there is lot of improvements needed in all parts of the game.
