Washington Cricket Club Won By 2 runs to storm into the Finals

Match report Oh boy !! What a game and a nail-biting finish as we won by 2 runs. Excellent team performance under pressure and defended a low score against a good team.

Brief Scores:
Washington - 144 All out in 34.5 overs
VA Lions - 142 All out in 37 overs.

Another gloomy, cloudy and chilly day in store for us. Won the toss and elected to bat first, Sameer and Kalyan opened the innings. Both of them started to read the pitch and bounce, it was slow and low.
Their opening bowler a young lad, bowled accurately without giving any width and bowled intelligently (rare praise from me!!). Sameer and Kal tried to hit the ball, but never got connected, and in the process, Kal(5) got a beauty and was bowled. Raj(0) went in at #3, but could not survive and got LBW. We lost two quick wickets. Tarun next and tried to slow down the innings and rebuild, but on the other end, Sameer(6) got out bowled, he could not move forward or backward as he tried to jab. Seeing wickets tumbling Palash(2) went up the order to stem the flow, but he too fell LBW, looks like the bowl was going over the stumps and hit him high on the pads, not a good LBW decision. At that time our score card looked pathetic and miserable at 32/5 in 9 overs. Very bad start for the team. Viral and Sharath, knew they had a match to fight it out, and played with abundant caution, Sharath played very straight bat and knew that he has to stick around with Viral. At the second break we were 63/5 in 20 overs. Both of them did played intelligently and never took a risk as they collected one's and two's all around the ground, Viral punished whenever he got a bad ball by clearing the ropes with ease. On the other hand, Sharath knew the importance of his wicket and rotated the strike. At the 27th over, Viral(45) got bowled by a yorker. We were 120/6. A very good partnership of around 90 runs, under tremendous pressure by both these batsman. Sharath(25) too got out in the very next over and we were back under pressure, and added to that Murali(0) also threw his wicket. Anil and Pratik tried to gather runs and did their best to add to the tally, when Pratik(9) got unnecessary run-out, calling and running between the wickets was not good. Anil(8) too got out soon by heaving on the off-side and a thin edge gobbled by keeper. Ankit(1*)could not do much as we were bowled out for paltry 144 runs in 34.5 overs. We missed out batting 30 balls, and could have easily scored 30-40 runs more.

Lions were confident of the low chase, but weather conditions were little different and they knew it in their hearts. All they needed was a good blazing start, which they never got, as Anil and Sharath again opened the bowling and bowled accurate line and length, when Sharath got the first break through. Their batsman are all known for only hitting and could not stick around and play, which is their weakness, they could not score easily due to the damp outfield and at first break they were 28/1 in 10 overs. Ankit and Viral came into the attack and bowled superbly to create more pressure on their batsman, and as runs dried up, they tried to hit out, and wickets started to fell in regular intervals. Viral(2/19) bowled economically. At second break they were 64/4 in 20 overs. Anil came back and took a crucial wicket to tilt the game. And lions started to panic as we only needed 5 more wickets, Sharath(2/33) too was brought in and responded with another wicket, and with 4 more wickets remaining and around 35 runs to win, it was anybody's game. This is where we fielded and bowled very well, never gave them easy runs and frustrated their batsman, they too played waiting game. But their batsman hit two sixers to ease the pressure, but we were always focused, Sameer(1/20) got rid of their dangerous batsman through Kalyan, who took a flat catch at the deep long-off. With three more wickets and 20 runs, their tail to bat, we cramped them for runs and blocked the off-side and with our bowlers bowling off-side line, never easy to hit. Anil(3/36) got rid of their 9th batsman and with 1 more wicket and 15 runs to go, it was nerve-wracking moments for both teams. Their last pair added 12 runs, and 3 more for a win, when Ankit(2/28) bowled a beauty to drag the batsman outside the crease and Palash finished it with superb stumping.

Overall a very good bowling and fielding. We never dropped a single chance, as we can see 7 of our fielders were among the catching list. Superb effort. It was a tough back-to-back games, and pretty sure all our players are with some or the other pains and cramps. We have 5 more days to regroup, get enough rest and massage(if necessary) and get plenty of sleep too. And we have one more game to go, do not get excited and consider it as just another game and we should stick to our basics as we have done all through the season and the results will take care of itself. And remember, there is no "I" in the "TEAM". It is always a team effort. Enough Gyan and let us prepare mentally and physically for another good game.
